Beginning in 2010, ATM developed the first in a series of industry-leading apps for Mercedes-Benz USA to support vehicle sales. In 2014, MB USA tasked us with making the apps even more focused — this time with the goal of creating sales tools to support a digitally enhanced dealer showroom experience.

Setting a new standard

My team responded by redesigning and rebuilding these apps to include features never before seen in automotive apps. In addition to a robust Build-Your-Own section and a rich video library, ATM added features like real-time inventory search to help dealers sell inventory on the floor.

Shell App Architecture

The strategy for a Shell app was pretty straightforward. First, we needed to simplify the architecture into more manageable apps for each vehicle model. Then, we created a wrapper application (the shell) to create a lean UX upfront and keep file size down to meet Apple App Store specs.

For the virtual tour feature, I leveraged the iPads native gyroscope to create a VR-esque experience. Essentially enabling users to pan the camera around in spatial relation. For example, if they wanted to view the back seats they would hold the iPad and turn around to look behind.

The real-time inventory feature helped locate vehicles for both dealer reps and customers alike. While not so radical the real trick was integrating the back-end APIs for the various systems from MB USA website, Dealer POS, and native apps.

Video content throughout helped illustrate vehicle features to facilitate a more immersive discovery experience enabling dealer sales reps to create a more engaging vehicle showcasing.

The Owner's Manual

Another component of the dealer experience was an onboarding video. I prototyped the experience and partnered closely with our front-end developers and video production teams to create and optimize the interaction, motion design, and app performance across platforms.
